What a cookie is

A cookie is a small file a website asks your browser to keep, and sends back every time you visit. Some are unavoidable — they keep you signed in, or remember what is in a basket. Most of the ones you are asked about elsewhere are there to count you, follow you between sites, or sell advertising.

This site sets none of them

The public pages of this website — the home page, the Group finder, every Group page, the events, the contact details — set no cookies at all. There is no analytics, no tracking, no advertising, and no profiling. We do not count visitors and we do not share anything with anyone.

The one cookie on this domain is CF_Authorization, set by Cloudflare Access on /admin to keep a signed-in district volunteer signed in. It is strictly necessary for that, so it needs no consent, and it is never set for a member of the public.

The maps, and the one choice there is

The Group finder and the Group pages can show a map. The map images are not ours: your browser fetches them, tile by tile, directly from OpenStreetMap as you pan and zoom. That means your IP address — roughly, where you are connecting from — reaches them. It is not a cookie, and it is not tracking as such, but it is your device talking to somebody else's server, and you might reasonably prefer it did not.

So that is what the banner asks, and it is the only thing it asks. Say no and the maps simply do not load: a note appears in their place, with a button to load one just that once if you change your mind. Nothing is hidden behind the map. Every Group on it is in the list beneath it, with its meeting place, its sections and a link to its page, and every Group page carries its own address whether the map loads or not.

Your choice, and how to change it

Your choice is kept in this browser, so it is shown here once the page has loaded.

Your answer is remembered in your browser's local storage, under ncs-district:map-consent:v1 — not in a cookie. Using a cookie to record "please, no third parties" seemed an odd way to go about it. It never leaves your device, we never see it, and clearing your browser's site data removes it, after which the banner will ask again.

If your browser blocks site data altogether, nothing breaks: the choice holds for the visit, and the banner asks again next time.

Everything else that could have been a cookie, and is not

• The fonts are served from this site, not from Google. Nothing about your visit goes to them.
• The events calendar comes from Teamup, which we read on our own server and send you the result. Your browser never contacts Teamup.
• Links to Facebook, Google Maps and Group websites are ordinary links. Nothing from those services is embedded in our pages, and they learn nothing about you unless you choose to follow the link.
• The forms post to this site and nowhere else. What happens to what you send is set out in the privacy notice.
